British GP: Sprint Team Notes – Alpine
Alpine F1 Team will start tomorrow’s British Grand Prix with both cars in the top ten on the grid after a sensational performance in Sprint qualifying by Fernando Alonso and Esteban Ocon.
Fernando had an epic race throughout the 17 laps, the very first Sprint qualifying race in Formula 1, moving from eleventh on the grid to fifth on lap one thanks to an inspired strategic appeal of using soft tires, a great start and a few solid first turns. Using the tires to his advantage in the opening laps, the Spaniard maintained his position until the McLarens advanced to lap ninth. He then kept Sebastian Vettel at bay with defensive driving and measured tire management to finish seventh at the end of the race and a solid position for tomorrow’s race.
Esteban also put in a strong performance, moving from thirteenth on the grid to tenth under the checkered flag. The Frenchman also started on Softs and had an equally impressive start in the first corner, passing Pierre Gasly out of the line.
He inherited two more positions following Carlos Sainz’s move to Turn 6 and Sergio Perez’s pirouette at Turn 14. Esteban also had to make an impressive defensive change to contain Gasly and a Sainz in charge at the checkered flag. .
The 52-lap British Grand Prix kicks off tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. local time in front of a full house.
Esteban Ocon: “I’m quite happy with today’s Sprint qualifying as we have gained three places for tomorrow’s race and that means we start in the top 10 for tomorrow’s race. That’s where we thought we should. being yesterday so it’s positive. The team’s call to start on Softs was good and I had a quick start to gain some positions. I enjoyed the new format; it was fun because it has added some action and dynamism to the weekend as well as a little bit of uncertainty Tomorrow we have a free tire choice again and that leaves the strategy box open with some flexibility on what we can do. We’re ready to race again and hopefully we can put on another show for the fans. “
Fernando Alonso: “It was a good session for us today and I had a lot of fun. I think we made the right choice starting on the soft tires and it’s a better position to start the race tomorrow. Our start was good. and I climbed quite a few places from eleventh to fifth in the first corners. We then lost a few positions to McLarens and held on to seventh at the end. I think the format was fun, but I am sure there are a few small improvements we can make. I’ll try to build on that momentum in the race tomorrow. “
Davide Brivio, race director: âIt was an exciting race for us, so a very positive Sprint qualifying overall! We decided to start with new Softs, which was a calculated risk, but a good choice for the team. Fernando definitely made the most of the strategy; he had an incredible first lap, gaining six positions in a half-lap, and then he struggled throughout the race. With Esteban we also gained some positions, which is important for the Grand Prix of tomorrow. It was a good job. drivers and also the whole team and now we have to try to consolidate our positions tomorrow. “
