George Russell will replace Valtteri Bottas in the Mercedes driver lineup for the 2022 F1 season. Hamilton will find him a tougher teammate than his predecessor, Alonso said, but his championship chances will depend on “the Mercedes car and how it performs.”

“Of course, I think he has shown his talent on several occasions before, his speed,” said Alonso. “Even last year, when he jumped into the Mercedes in Bahrain, he was close to the first victory. So, for sure it will be more difficult for Lewis than Valtteri.

“But I think it will be up to Mercedes to provide them with a good car and I think he’s up to the challenge. So it will be interesting to watch for sure.

Max Verstappen gave a similar assessment of Hamilton’s new teammate last month, saying Russell “will make it very difficult for Lewis”.
